Laughter is the Best Medicine

Have you ever tried, or even heard of, Laughter Yoga? It seems to be one of the Wellness Community’s best kept secrets!

Laughter Yoga is a series of light exercise and clapping movements, all accompanied by laughter… just what you need to get those feel-good endorphins flowing through the body.

The activities include breathing exercises taken from yoga. These are designed to calm the Central Nervous System, reducing the anxious or stressed ‘fight or flight’ state in the body and providing a sense of well-being.

Developed in India in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria and his wife Madhuri, Laughter Yoga was taught throughout the world, making its way to Perth in 2000. Since then the Perth Laughter Club has continued to grow and now has Laughter Clubs throughout metro and country areas.

I invited Peter Schupp, of Kaizen Wellbeing, to host a session of Laughter Yoga as part of our Wellness Program at my workplace.

Peter was highly engaging and had us all clapping, moving and laughing in no time! The session was a great hit with all who ventured into the unknown and dared to attend!

We all know that ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine’ … 🤣

*It's a great stress reliever – releases the happy hormones - endorphins, serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine 🤣

*Promotes deep breathing – releases stale air from the lungs, increasing oxygen and blood flow *Stabilisers blood sugar through light exercise 🤣

*Provides a sense of relaxation and wellbeing, reducing blood pressure 🤣

*Increases resilience – the ability to bounce back from stressful situations. 🤣

*Encourages Team building and bonding in a work/school environment 🤣

*Provides a total break out session away from the confines of your normal work or office environment, increasing well-being and productivity.

Laughter Yoga is great for all ages and fitness levels. The only pre-requisite is to wear comfortable clothing and bring your smile!
